Charlene Niemi

UCLA Joe C. Wen School of Nursing Associate Adjunct Professor Charlene Niemi, PhD, MSN, RN, PHN, has co-authored a new book, The Nurse Educator: Teaching with the Times. This resource is designed to support nurse educators in navigating the evolving landscape of nursing education with confidence and clarity.

Published by Cognella Academic Publishing, the book is intended to help educators transition from clinical practice to the classroom. While nurses bring years of experience to their teaching roles, many struggle with curriculum design, technology integration, and best-practice instructional strategies. The Nurse Educator: Teaching with the Times bridges this gap by offering practical, concise guidance for educators in academic, clinical, and experiential settings.

“We wrote this book to make teaching less stressful and more rewarding for nursing faculty,” said Niemi, who co-authored the guide alongside Mary Jo Stanley, PhD, a professor of health sciences and Vice President for Accreditation and Academic Success at Colorado Mesa University. “Our goal is to provide practical solutions that empower educators to feel confident in their role while preparing future nurses to deliver safe, competent care.”

Designed for new and transitioning nurse educators, including academic faculty, hospital and community educators, simulation instructors, and graduate nursing education students, the book serves as a toolkit for effective teaching in today’s evolving healthcare environment. It includes chapters on inclusive teaching practices, hands-on activities using real-world examples, curriculum development techniques, and more.
