Anthony Tolentino

Anthony Tolentino, PhD, RN, NI-BC, FAMIA, an assistant professor and researcher in the UCLA School of Nursing, has been selected to join the National Institutes of Health’s Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity & Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) Bridge2AI AI-READI (Artificial Intelligence Ready and Equitable Atlas for Diabetes Insights )Training Program.

The AIM-AHEAD initiative is designed to increase the number of health science researchers developing artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) models for health and healthcare related issues. AIM-AHEAD’s primary focus is the utilization of AI/ML to process vast amounts of data generated through electronic health records. Through a data-science approach, researchers will be able to identify new areas of biomedical research with the end goal of improving healthcare for all.

“I am honored to be part of this transformative initiative and receive mentorship from renowned AI/ML researchers,” Dr. Tolentino said. “By participating in the AIM-AHEAD Bridge2AI AI-READI program, we aim to drive AI/ML discoveries in type 2 diabetes, uncovering critical insights – including salutogenic pathways to recovery- and help break down healthcare barriers to ensure that the benefits of these emerging technologies reach all communities.”

Board-certified in nursing informatics, Dr. Tolentino has more than a decade of informatics experience in acute and ambulatory settings with a research focus on the examination of the influence of culture, environment, social determinants, and other underlying mechanisms leading to differences in health outcomes, particularly in minoritized groups. He has worked on improving nurses’ user experience with electronic health records and has supported the implementation of health information technology to improve patient safety and work efficiency.
