Nursing professor selected to serve on American Midwifery Certification Board committee
Wei-Ti Chen, RN, CNM, PhD, FAAN, professor and Lulu Wolf Hassenplug Chair in Nursing in the UCLA Joe C. Wen School of Nursing, has been selected to serve on the Research Committee of the American Midwifery Certification Board.
AMCB is the national certification body for Certified Nurse-Midwives and plays a critical role in setting certification standards, informing evidence-based clinical practice, and shaping the future of midwifery in the United States. As a member of the Research Committee for the 2026-2028 term, Dr. Chen will contribute to national policy discussions and help guide research priorities that advance and strengthen the midwifery profession nationwide.
In addition to this appointment, Dr. Chen has also been awarded funding from the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations to support her research initiatives. This recognition underscores her commitment to advancing global health and midwifery through innovative scholarship and leadership.
“This work, supported by the Burkle Center, addresses a critical gap in understanding how resilience among Myanmar refugee women develops and evolves over time in resource-limited settings shaped by compounded trauma, generating evidence needed to inform culturally and contextually tailored mental health interventions that uphold human rights,” said Dr. Chen. “By conducting in-depth interviews with women Myanmar refugees, I aim to strengthen the scientific foundation of midwifery and women’s health by centering voices that are often absent from existing research. In parallel, my service on the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) Research Committee allows me to bring this emerging evidence into national discussions on certification standards and research priorities, helping ensure that midwifery education and practice remain evidence-based, equitable, and responsive to complex care contexts.”
