Mary Bryan, a registered nurse at UCLA Health and current advanced practice student in the School of Nursing, recently presented her work at the 48th Annual Oncology Nursing Society’s National Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

“ONS (Oncology Nursing Society) Congress provides oncology nurses an opportunity to learn, empower, and inspire one another. I am incredibly grateful and honored to have been selected as a poster presenter at this year's ONS Congress,” Bryan said. “Attending ONS Congress encourages my relentless pursuit to provide the best care for the people we care for. Most importantly, it reminds me that in order to pour into others we must first pour into ourselves.”

Her quality improvement project, “Implementing Dedicated Hazardous Drug Storage Across the In-Patient Oncology Areas,” examined the storage and handling of hazardous drugs (HDs) within inpatient oncology settings. A gap analysis revealed that several inpatient oncology units did not meet storage requirements. This presented an area of opportunity to be in alignment with regulatory standards and institutional values to support nursing and environmental safety. In September 2022, Bryan was able to successfully implement dedicated hazardous drug storage across the inpatient oncology areas.

This quality improvement project was part of Bryan’s Dual CNS/NP program.
