UCLA Nursing’s Welcome Week helps build a sense of community for new and returning students
In the new academic year, the UCLA School of Nursing welcomed 206 new students to the BS, MECN, APRN, DNP, and PhD programs. The Welcome Week programs marked the beginning of the new academic year with a variety of activities to allow students to get to know their peers, faculty, and staff.
The New Student Welcome program brough together new students, faculty, and staff, as well as keynote speaker, Holly Nuckols, MSN, RN, PHN, Nursing Career Ladder & Talent Acquisition Specialist at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Students also heard from Dean & Professor Lin Zhan, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Deans, Program Directors, and the UCLA Dean of Students Dr. Jasmine Rush.
UCLA Nursing school kicked off the first day of class with its staple gathering, the Back to School Breakfast Social, where new and continuing students, staff and faculty attended and had the chance to get to know each other. In addition, the school hosted a welcome breakfast for the DNP program and luncheon for new and continuing PhD students. Faculty, current PhD students and staff met for lunch to celebrate the start of a new academic year and to welcome new PhD students. The meeting was also an opportunity to exchange research ideas and learn more about future programs and events.
This year, the school also worked with student leaders to host a Student Organizations’ Fair, where all UCLA School of Nursing Student Organizations were brough together at the Center for Health Sciences (CHS) Courtyard for a time to network with students and grow their visibility and presence at the school and at UCLA.
Along with community building opportunities, the school also hosted several lectures, including a Faculty Spotlight Lecture featuring Nalo Hamilton, PhD, MSN, APRN-BC, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion. Dr. Hamilton she shared insight about her work, research, and success in academia and beyond.
