Nahid Karimi, DNP (’25), MSN (’19), FNP-BC, has published her DNP Scholarly Project, Continuous glucose monitoring for glycemic control in non–insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes, in the Journal of the American Associate of Nurse Practitioners.

This project highlights the importance of individualized diabetes management for patients with type 2 diabetes who are not on insulin. It supports a more tailored approach in which CGM is used selectively, alongside strong patient education and ongoing follow-up. Nurse Practitioners are well positioned to lead this effort by identifying appropriate candidates for CGM, providing education, monitoring progress, and adjusting care plans as needed. This approach has the potential to improve glycemic control, patient engagement, and long-term outcomes in diabetes care.

"I chose continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for non–insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes because, despite growing evidence supporting CGM use, this population is often overlooked in clinical practice" Dr. Karimi stated. "Most CGM recommendations focus on patients using insulin, leaving a gap in guidance for those managed with oral or non-insulin injectable medications. My DNP project showed that CGM can be beneficial for some non–insulin-treated patients, but its effectiveness is not universal. Positive outcomes were closely tied to several key factors, including patient education about diabetes, close clinical follow-up, consistent and longer use of CGM devices, and adherence to prescribed non-insulin diabetes medications. In simple terms, CGM works best when it is part of a personalized care plan rather than a one-size-fits-all solution."

Dr. Karimi earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Iran and gained early clinical experience working in cardiac care units. After relocating to the United States, she completed her Family Nurse Practitioner degree at UCLA in 2019. Since then, Dr. Karimi has worked primarily with underserved populations in downtown Los Angeles. Dr. Karimi completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at UCLA in June 2025. Currently, she practices in an internal medicine outpatient clinic at Keck USC, where she cares for adults with complex chronic conditions.
