SON In the News

A story on the front page of the California section of the LA Times on December 5 about mobile health features the research of Dr. Jo-Ann Eastwood, who is looking at reducing the risk of heart disease among young African-American women.  The story also ran in the Waterbury Republican and American and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution.

Acting Dean Linda Sarna joined Dean Gene Washington of the Geffen School of Medicine to publish this blog post at the Huffington Post supporting bike lanes on Westwood Boulevard.

In honor of the Great American Smokeout this week, the Daily Bruin and UCLA Today published stories; both featured Dean Sarna. The Daily Bruin Op-ed encouraged the UCLA community to sustain the tobacco-free environment. TheUCLA Today story discussed a new "e-referral" program that will be available to inpatients and outpatients of the UCLA Health System.

A story in the Daily Bruin highlighted the journey of MECN student Rachel Stone, who successfully underwent a prophylactic mastectomy after finding out she had a genetic mutation that gave her a higher probability of developing breast cancer.

A visit by several UCLA Nursing students to the remote First Nation in Canada during Summer 2014 was featured in the Fall 2104 Aboriginal Nurses' Association of Canada Newsletter.

Advance for Nurses featured Oct. 3 an article on Patti Taylor, a volunteer nurse coordinator with the UCLA Operation Mend program and Lecturer with SON, who was recently surprised by the Operation Mend program, the UCLA Health System and the UCLA School of Nursing when they announced a new student scholarship and a new nursing award had been established in her name. Both honors will recognize community or public service, with special consideration to service that addresses military or veteran health care, or working with active-duty military or those re-entering civilian life. The scholarship and the award were made possible by the Katz Family Foundation with a matching gift from the UCLA Health System.  Linda Sarna, acting dean of the UCLA School of Nursing, and Heidi Crooks, senior associate director of UCLA Health Operations and Patient Care Services, were cited.
