UCLA School of Nursing Receives $2.6 million HRSA Grant

(Los Angeles - October 31, 2012)  The UCLA School of Nursing has been awarded a $2.6 million grant from the US Department of Health Resources and Administration (HRSA) to support minority and disadvantaged students pursuing advanced practice nursing degrees.

The grant will be awarded over a four-year period and begins this semester.  Up to 43 students in the advanced practice program per year will receive $15,000. Funding will offset the costs of tuition, fees and books.    Students will be encouraged to work in primary care with medically underserved communities.

"Studies have continued to show that nurse practitioners deliver high-quality, cost effective comprehensive care in diverse healthcare settings including primary care, hospitals and managed care facilities," said Courtney H. Lyder, ND, ScD(Hon), FAAN, dean of the UCLA School of Nursing.  "This grant illustrates the vital role that nurse practitioners will play as a result of the Affordable Care Act.  The future of healthcare is definitively tied to the future of nursing."

According to HRSA, the current primary care workforce in the United States is inadequate to meet the growing demand for primary care services. Moreover, the aging workforce, the increasing demand for preventative health services and the expansion of health care coverage from the Affordable Care Act will likely widen the gap between demand and the available primary care workforce. Grant programs such as this help to increase access to primary care services and to expand the primary care workforce.

There are currently 200 nurses in the advanced practice program at the UCLA School of Nursing.

The UCLA School of Nursing is redefining nursing through the pursuit of uncompromised excellence in research, education, practice policy and patient advocacy.  For more information, please visit nursing.ucla.edu.
