Research interest: Role of Physical Activity and Diet in the Prevention and Treatment of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases
We need to understand how genetic factors and environmental exposures interact in individuals to alter normal biological function and to affect the risk of disease development. My research investigates the role of nutrition and exercise in the development and prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. My long-term goals are to 1) utilize a population to molecule approach to gain insight into disease mechanisms, and 2) individualize diet and exercise prescription based on genomics. I recently received a Beginning Grant-in-Aid from the American Heart Association, Western States Affiliate to investigate the effects of resistance training on cardiovascular risk. These studies incorporate the use of randomized clinical trial study design and measurement techniques such as dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), human monocyte isolation, oral glucose tolerance testing, tissue biopsy microarrays and tonometry to determine arterial stiffness.
