Research and Scholarship

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Lewis has conducted several health services research studies funded by various Institutes of the National Institutes of Health. Earlier studies focused on the origin of adult health behaviors in childhood. The results of these studies served as the basis for randomized clinical trials of child-centered, family-focused interventions for children with chronic disease (asthma and epilepsy) in the United States and Chile. She also worked with the Ministry of Health in Egypt for over 12 years to improve the health of school-age children in Cairo and the rural areas. More recent studies have included community-based interventions for Latino children with asthma and their families in Los Angeles. Dr. Lewis has studied the outcomes of nursing home admissions and the impact of the AIDS epidemic on prenatally drug-exposed infants who were dependents of the juvenile court of Los Angeles County and their drug-using mothers. Currently she is studying individuals with developmental disabilities.
